Studwelders Composite Floor Decks were selected to supply and install over 8000 square metres of long-span MetFloor 60 steel decking and carry out the concreting on the Cardiff Bay Premier Inn.
The £15M 210-bed hotel features an iconic design, occupying a prime location on the Cardiff waterfront, and will be the chain's largest hotel when it opens in September 2019.
Studwelders CFD Ltd were appointed to supply and fit MetFloor steel decking, CSC steel shear studs, FASET-compliant safety netting and undertake the concreting works on top of the MetFloor decking to produce a lightweight composite floor deck system when working on the new Cardiff Bay Premier Inn. Studwelders have a long history of contracts with Premier Inn, as the composite floor slab and beam system is favoured in many of their hotel plans, and Studwelders not only manufacture their own MetFloor steel decking and CSC steel shear stud ranges through CMF, part of the Studwelders CFD group, but they also undertake all the concreting works themselves, allowing them to install the composite flooring system from start to finish.
Apart from the over 8000 square metres of long-span trapezoidal MetFloor 60 steel decking, Studwelders were also contracted to provide the concreting services on this project. Apart from traditional concreting, which Studwelders teams carry out after installing traditional reinforcement steel meshes, Studwelders also offer their innovative Fibredeck fibre reinforcement alternative. Fibredeck consists of blended Fibermesh (a world leading brand of micro-synthetic fibres) and Novocon high performance steel fibres. These are combined within traditional concrete to deliver a three dimensional reinforcement solution for use with MetFloor composite decking. Pre-mixed offsite, FibreDeck is supplied ready to pump and provides measurable performance benefits for the lifespan of the concrete slab. FibreDeck’s micro-synthetic fibres reduce plastic shrinkage and cracking, and Novocon’s steel fibres increase toughness and ensure long term crack control. Studwelders carried out their extensive contract from December 2017 into Spring 2018.
The 210-bed Premier Inn is situated in Cardiff Bay, a former industrial brownfield site that has undergone a radical transformation in recent years into Wales’s top business destination. In keeping with its surroundings, the hotel has a cutting-edge modern design, with an iconic white ‘brick-slip’ façade, and bespoke elliptical windows across its 7 upper storeys. The project lasted 74 weeks in total, and the hotel is set to open in September 2019, whereupon it will be the largest Premier Inn in the UK. Neighbouring sites have been acquired by the same developer, with the intention of constructing thousands of square metres of Grade A office space, meaning there is great potential for Studwelders to return to Cardiff Bay in the near future.
